Bend, but don’t break. That strategy defined Guam’s approach in the first half against Puerto Rico in the 2026 FIFA Series game.
Guam’s defenders and goalkeeper Josiah Jones kept Puerto Rico scoreless for the opening 45 minutes. Jones faced several shots, suffered two injuries, but remained in the match. His performance shone through with spectacular saves, diving to claim the ball and putting his body on the line.
Guam had limited attacking chances, highlighted by a free kick from team captain Jason Cunliffe at the edge of Puerto Rico’s box. The host nation controlled possession throughout.
“It has been all Puerto Rico,” noted the announcer during the live stream. “They’re probably wondering how they haven’t managed to find a way past that man yet, Josiah Jones. They’re doing everything but score at the moment.”
Guam held firm in the first half but crumbled after the break. Defensive resilience has limits, particularly against world No. 156 Puerto Rico, while Guam sits at No. 201.
Seven minutes into the second half, Wilfredo Rivera broke through down the flank with a low, hard strike into the lower left corner past Jones. Five minutes later, Ricardo Rivera latched onto a through pass and tapped home. Four minutes after that, Wilfredo Ricardo netted from an improbable angle near the touchline.
“Brilliant!” the announcer exclaimed. “How do you find the net from there? Again, Guam guilty of not getting the ball clear.”
Leandro Antonetti converted a penalty in the 76th minute to seal the 4-0 victory.
