US men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino understands the intense pressure of representing a nation at the World Cup better than most of his players.

As a player, Pochettino experienced this firsthand. He was cut from Argentina’s squads in 1994 and 1998 before finally earning a spot in 2002 as a veteran on a highly favored team. Argentina faced an unprecedented economic crisis at the time, with the entire nation pinning its hopes on La Albiceleste.

Pochettino Reflects on Argentina’s World Cup Heartbreak

“Argentine people feel the pressure,” Pochettino shared during a press conference ahead of the USMNT’s friendlies against Belgium and Portugal. “Football is a battle to survive. It was really an energy that was so heavy, and we didn’t deal with that.”

Argentina’s 2002 campaign under Marcelo Bielsa, featuring stars like Juan Sebastián Verón and Gabriel Batistuta, ended disastrously. The team crashed out of the group stage for the first time in 50 years. After a draw with Sweden, players sank to their knees in tears, refusing to leave the pitch.

Nearly 25 years later, Pochettino leads a USMNT that has never faced such sky-high expectations. Yet pressure has always loomed large—from the 1994 tournament hosted by the US to the upcoming 2026 event co-hosted with Mexico and Canada. While football isn’t life-or-death in the US like in Argentina, players in Pochettino’s squad will feel its weight on home soil.

Rejecting Pressure for Positive Energy

Pochettino avoids dwelling on pressure, favoring motivational approaches like team retreats with hot coals and trust falls. Speaking about the upcoming summer challenges, he emphasized mindset.

“There’s pressure for us, the coaching staff,” he said. “But we have a desire that our players perform, sending good energy – but not to create something where you say ‘it’s a tragedy if you lose.’ Because we believe that when you’re free, you perform. When you feel happy, you perform. You don’t need to feel the pressure. Because the pressure is a thing that if you don’t deal perfectly with it, it can be heavy.”

This talented USMNT generation appears ready for external hype around a home World Cup. Training at Atlanta United’s facility showed players in high spirits, laughing during rondos and small-sided games. Pochettino, Christian Pulisic, and Weston McKennie all engaged comfortably with media.

Christian Pulisic: Captain America Under the Spotlight

Pulisic, often called the most talented player in USMNT history and nicknamed Captain America, bears significant scrutiny. His face adorns billboards and bus shelters in Atlanta, fueling constant fan buzz online and offline.

“You guys want me to feel the pressure, that’s for sure,” Pulisic joked. “There’s pressure, it’s a World Cup, it’s not because of my position in the team or anything. I’m used to this, I wouldn’t want to be in any other position, I’m lucky to be in this position. There’s pressure, I can feel it, yes, it’s there, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. I’m going to attack it head on. I don’t need to do it myself, that’s the beauty of it. I have the whole team behind me, the staff, a country of fans and I’m just going to do the best I can do.”

Pochettino’s Motivation Strategy for USMNT Success

As the highest-paid coach in US soccer history, Pochettino faces immense expectations to instill grit in a squad some critics deem lacking intangibles. He has built strong bonds with players.

“I think the motivation begins from the first day you meet someone,” he explained in Spanish. “It’s vital energy that you have within yourself, where you prepare your body, your mind, your being, so that you can enjoy what you’re doing … Words, a lot of the time, are empty. I can give you a motivational speech right here that’s incredible. But if I don’t create an emotional bond with you, it’s impossible that you’ll be motivated by my words … If it doesn’t affect you in your heart, it’s very hard.”

Pochettino’s optimism, though polarizing for some jaded fans, inspires with patriotic zeal. He recently rallied the team: “Why not us?”

“Dreams inspire reality,” he added when discussing World Cup contention. “What I am saying is that I am here because I believe that we can win. I can tell people that I really believe that. Whether that happens or doesn’t happen, there are too many factors in the middle. But the most important piece is that we believe that we can perform and to compete and that we can earn what we want. Because we are American.”
