Rodri Admits He Could Not Turn Down Real Madrid Transfer Opportunity
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has expressed his desire to return to Spanish football one day and stated that he “could not turn down” the chance to play for Real Madrid.
The 29-year-old Spain international, who previously played for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, has been a pivotal player in Pep Guardiola’s squad since joining from England in 2019. He has helped secure four Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League trophy.
“Would I like to play in Spain again, in La Liga, in Madrid? I would like to return, yes, obviously,” Rodri shared from his side’s international camp.
“Having played for Atletico before would not prevent me from playing for Real Madrid … there are other players who have done that before. Maybe not direct transfers, but eventually. You can’t turn down one of the world’s best clubs.”
Rodri confirmed his Manchester City contract expires in 2027. “I have one year left on my contract,” he noted. “There will come a point where we will have to sit down and talk.”
This is not the first time Rodri has discussed a potential move to Madrid. Previously, he mentioned to Spanish radio: “Obviously, when Real Madrid calls you, the greatest club in history and the most decorated, it is an honour. You always have to pay attention.”
Rodri has featured in 28 games this season for City.
He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injury to his right knee in September 2024, sidelining him for eight months. Despite a two-month layoff from a hamstring injury, the 59-capped Spain international has remained a constant presence for Guardiola’s side, logging 28 appearances this season.
