In a tense FIFA Series opener, the Socceroos clinched a 1-0 win against Cameroon thanks to Jordan Bos’s sharp finish in the 85th minute. Bos capitalized on a misplaced pass from Paul Okon-Engstler that deflected off Ajdin Hrustić, firing home to secure the points and redeem Hrustić’s earlier penalty miss in the 70th minute.
Australia 1-0 Cameroon in Friendly
Breaking a Losing Streak Ahead of World Cup
This hard-fought victory ended a three-game losing streak for the Socceroos, dating back to a defeat against the United States in Colorado last October. It also marked their first goal since that loss. Fans witnessed the debut of new kits and the starting appearance of 18-year-old Lucas Herrington, the youngest defender for Australia since Brett Woods in 1981.
Playing their penultimate home game before departing for the World Cup in North America, the Socceroos struggled to test Cameroon goalkeeper Devis Epassy on a challenging pitch at Accor Stadium until Bos’s intervention. Epassy’s first significant save came from denying Hrustić’s penalty with 20 minutes remaining.
Second-Half Surge Seals the Win
Nestory Irankunda, introduced at halftime, sparked threats in the 80th and 81st minutes, forcing sharp saves from Epassy before assisting the winner. The Socceroos dominated the second half with 65% possession, outshooting Cameroon 6-1, and generating more entries into the box.
The game built momentum heading into next Tuesday’s clash with Curaçao, who fell 2-0 to China earlier at the same venue. Australia’s first-half efforts were often thwarted by errors or last-ditch Cameroon defending.
“We just looked a little bit anxious in the first half,” said the coach. “I thought we created some good openings, didn’t really finish off the chances. We were never really troubled defensively, but it was just a little more stretched than what we would have liked. And then in the second half, in attack and defence, we were very solid: more compact, more aggressive, and the players felt a lot more comfortable.”
The halftime substitutions of Irankunda and Awer Mabil injected pace into the attack. Irankunda’s energy followed an overhit cross from Italiano and a foul by Oliver Kamdem on Aiden O’Neill, leading to the penalty.
“It’s something that I can do,” said Irankunda. “Obviously, we had to regroup in the second half and go again with more energy. And I felt like I brought the energy, and I felt like the rest of the boys backed me, and they came and gave the energy as well.”
Solid Defense Delivers Clean Sheet
Australia kept a clean sheet, a stark improvement from previous friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia last November. Cameroon managed six shots in the first half to Australia’s one, but none seriously tested Maty Ryan—their best effort, an 18th-minute header from Christian Kofane, went straight at the keeper.
Lucas Herrington shone alongside Alessandro Circati and Jason Geria, maintaining a compact defense that limited Cameroon’s access and forced long-range efforts. This allowed Jordan Bos and Italiano freedom to provide width.
“I’ve been very impressed with the young man,” the coach said of Herrington. “I wanted to see what he was like in this environment. And when I saw him train, I thought, ‘yes, he’s 18, so you can find an excuse not to play him if you want’, but I thought, ‘let him go out there’.”
Pre-match preparations focused on key areas still under development ahead of World Cup openers against Turkey or Kosovo in Vancouver. Bos and Irankunda provided crucial momentum.
“Momentum is key for any team in football,” said Riley McGree. “To get the win today was exactly what we wanted and what we needed; going forward, we can take a lot of confidence from that.”
